Traditional liposuction can effectively remove large volumes of body fat, but does not have a positive effect on skin laxity. This is why many plastic and cosmetic surgeons prefer to perform liposuction with laser lipolysis techniques.
The SmartLipo is among the leading laser liposuction procedures available in the United States, and Cynosure, the makers of SmartLipo, have developed the innovative SmartLipo Triplex laser body sculpting system, that helps to tighten and tone the skin, and can also get rid of localized fat deposits.
SmartLipo TriPlex is the latest advancement in laser lipolysis, and is the only system in the world that combines three different wavelengths so that the doctor can destroy both large and small volumes of fat, and also tighten and tone the skin. The procedure promises to be a minimally-invasive alternative to traditional liposuction, and may be up to 20 times more efficient for getting rid of body fat than other laser devices.
According to Dr. Ishooe, a board-certified surgeon at the Boston Cosmetic Surgery Center in Marshfield, “Patient downtime after traditional liposuction surgery is significant…however, with the new laser-assisted SmartLipo TriPlex Laser Body Sculpting procedure, my patients can return to normal activities such as work, in virtually no time at all – healing is significantly accelerated. SmartLipo is ideal for treating fat deposits on the face and body and the ancillary benefit of the laser stimulating collagen production leaves the skin firm, which is an amazing and welcomed benefit.”
The SmartLipo and SmartLipo TripLex procedures are especially effective for people who are not able to lose stubborn body fat even with diet and exercise. For many people struggling with losing body fat around the abdomen, upper arms, legs and back, SmartLipo and the SmartLipo TriPlex body contouring procedures offer a number of benefits.

With warmer months right around the corner, many men and women are considering going under the knife to improve their appearance.
However, there are now several procedures available that do not demand much downtime and can be performed within a few hours. These may be attractive options for those who want to enjoy a mini-makeover before the summer months, and avoid the risks and complications associated with more extensive procedures, such as facelift surgery, traditional liposuction and other body contouring procedures.
Dr. Dave David recently appeared on The Rhode Show on Fox Providence to discuss some of the latest procedures for the season. He recommends VASER Lipo, instead of conventional liposuction for those who want to lose a few pounds and inches before the summer begins. VASER liposuction is an ultrasound liposuction procedure designed to remove body fat without requiring general anesthesia.
The procedure helps remove unwanted body fat from the hips, thighs, stomach, buttocks and waist. It is considered to be a ‘next generation’ procedure in body contouring, using ultrasonic energy to break up fatty deposits and easily remove the fat cells. Some doctors also report that this procedure helps tighten and tone the skin naturally, creating a more sculpted, contoured appearance. This type of liposuction procedure also promises minimal downtime.
Botox is an attractive option for those who want to reverse the signs of aging without getting a facelift. Botox injections can be administered on the forehead, and also injected into other facial compartments to temporarily get rid of fine lines and wrinkles. Dr. Dave David reports that Botox is another popular procedure for the season, and is particularly effective for correcting wrinkles on the forehead and nasolabial folds.
Both of these procedures can be performed on an outpatient basis and Botox can be performed over the lunch hour.

Laser lipoplasty, also known as laser lipolysis and laser liposuction, is among the most sought-after plastic surgery procedures in the United States.
Many plastic surgery centers and medical spas now offer this procedure on an outpatient basis, and advertise it as one of the quickest and most effective ways to permanently reduce body fat. The pros and cons of this innovative procedure were recently discussed by experts at the Annual Meeting of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) held at the Gaylord National Hotel and Convention Center this past April.
The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery’s statistics show that lipoplasty is currently the second most popular surgical procedure in the United States. Over 283,700 procedures were performed in 2009. Still, plastic surgeons are divided on whether this procedure is equally as or more effective than traditional liposuction.
According to Dr. Franklin DiSpaltro, MD, former president of the ASAPS, “the past two decades have been highly technology-driven, with the introduction of many advanced liposuction-assisting devices…each new technology has spurred great interest and enthusiasm. It is our role to determine if it is hype, or a useful tool.” (Source: MedicalNewsToday.com)
Laser-assisted lipoplasty works using a laser probe that is inserted into the fatty tissue through a very small incision. When the laser is fired, the fat cells rupture and are easy to extract with a cannula. The heat from the laser affects the surrounding tissue and causes it to contract. As the body heals from the surgery, the tissues become more tightened, toned and the overall result is a more sculpted, sleeker appearance.
While initial data showed that laser-assisted liposuction was no better than traditional liposuction, today’s advances and newer technology are offering more promising results. Surgeons must be trained with a special teaching protocol to effectively perform this procedure. Patients are advised to look for a skilled, experienced and board-certified plastic surgeon when considering liposuction and laser lipoplasty.

Over 80 percent of women are fighting the war against cellulite, and medical equipment manufacturers continue to explore new ways to treat the skin tissues and produce visible changes that will help reduce – or eliminate – cellulite. Eleme Medical has launched a new SmoothShapes XV device that promises to deliver heat to the fat cells approximately three times faster than the original SmoothShapes system and other body contouring devices, and provide better results with fewer treatments.
The Smoothshapes XV Anti-Cellulite device was unveiled at the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery in Phoenix, Arizona this month. The device is made with Eleme’s proprietary Photomology® technology that helps treat cellulite by delivering both laser and light energy deep into the skin tissues, and using mechanical manipulation with a vacuum and massage treatment to reach further into the skin tissues. The non-invasive procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, and there is no anesthesia required.
Some plastic surgeons are using the SmoothShapes device as part of a laser liposuction treatment, because the procedure helps to firm, tighten and tone the skin tissues after body fat has been removed. According to Nancy Briefs, President and CEO of Eleme Medical, “Consumer demand for non-invasive body shaping continues to grow…in a recent survey of physicians this consumer demand was validated by the physicians who said that the two largest categories in which they planned to purchase new equipment and grow their business were cellulite and laser lipolysis”. (Source: MedicalNewsToday.com)
Physicians who integrate the SmoothShapes device with a liposuction procedure may be able to achieve better results, and also reduce post-operative bruising, swelling and pain.
The SmoothShapes system designed with Photomology technology has received FDA clearance to market, and is currently available at select medical spas and cosmetic surgery centers around the country.

Many men and women that undergo the SmartLipo procedure for fat removal not only get the benefits of permanent fat reduction, but also enjoy skin tightening benefits. Unlike traditional liposuction, Study Says SmartLipo Offers Skin Tightening Benefits
SmartLipo uses heated laser energy to break down the fat cells before extraction. The fat-melting process causes tissue coagulation, which in turn helps to tighten and tone the area around the treatment area, and ultimately creates a more contoured, streamlined appearance.
Dr. Barry DiBernardo, Medical Director of New Jersey Plastic Surgery, recently led a study that evaluated the fat-disruption and tissue tightening around abdominal tissue that was treated with SmartLipo technologies. The test involved administering three separate wavelengths, including a 1440 nm laser. Results of the study were recently presented at the annual meeting of the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery in Phoenix, Arizona.
The 1440 nm wavelength is one of the newest options available with SmartLipo treatments, and is the highest-powered laser device that has been approved as a fat removal procedure by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
According to Michael Davin, President and chief executive officer of Cynosure, “The research presented at ASLMs further validates the investment we have made to increase the efficiency and performance of our Smartlipo technology with the addition of a 1440 nm wavelength.” The high-powered laser helps to provide more muscular definition after fat removal, including areas such as the arms, abdomen and legs. In some cases, the patient also experiences less post-operative trauma because the tissues contract quickly and heal faster than traditional liposuction procedures.
Laser liposuction is among the leading fat removal procedures available in the United States, and is currently available at hundreds of medical spas, plastic and cosmetic surgery centers around the country. More information about SmartLipo can be found here.

A 28-year old woman from Redmond was busy making preparations for her wedding day and decided to have laser-assisted liposuction to improve her appearance.
Laser-assisted liposuction has been available in the United States for several years, and is among the most sought-after procedures for men and women that want to get rid of a few ‘vanity’ pounds and improve their silhouette. This procedure is attractive to many because it is less invasive than traditional liposuction that requires the use of general anesthesia, and the procedure promises lasting results with less downtime and a lower risk of side effects.
Sadly, Ms. Aura Javellana of Redmond, a healthy bride-to-be, passed away recently shortly after her laser-assisted liposuction procedure from the Sono Bello Body Contour Center in Bellevue.
Sono Bello claims that they have “ruled out the major risk and complications that existed with traditional liposuction by introducing the use of new micro-instruments and laser assistance.” The center promotes the fact that patients can walk and walk out of the center the very same day, and that they can even return to work and resume regular activities the following day.
Unfortunately, these claims did not hold true for the 28-year old who simply wanted to get rid of a few unwanted pounds before her big day. On May 26, 2009, Ms. Javaellana underwent a 3.5 hour procedure that cost $8,000 to remove fat from her abs, love handles and upper arms. She checked into a hotel to recover from the procedure shortly after the procedure, but by the next morning, she was dead. Maids found her when they opened the door to clean her room.
The King County Medical Examiner reports that it was the procedure that killed her, and she died from “acute lidocaine intoxication”. She had lost blood and body fluid from the 11 puncture wounds that were left behind from the liposuction tubes used in the procedure.
The Corporate Medical Director of Sono Bello continues to claim that the woman’s death was of no fault of the clinic.

The Zerona laser system has been in the spotlight lately as doctors around the country have unveiled this surgery-free fat removal procedure. Zerona is designed to remove fat and reshape the body without needles and promises little to now downtime. The innovative laser system works from the outside to melt the fat under the skin tissues and releases it into interstitial space. The excess fat is passed through the body through detoxification, and is designed to be a replacement to conventional surgery for those who need to lose only a few pounds and inches.
The Zerona laser was featured on the Rachael Ray show in September 2009, and the doctor performing the demonstration stated that most people could lose about 4 inches of body fat after a series of treatments. The procedure does not require any anesthesia because the low-level laser is administered directly onto the skin without causing any discomfort. Similar types of lasers have been used for over 40 years to treat chronic pain and help to heal wounds.
Zerona only works after the patient undergoes a series of several treatments, and these can be administered three times a week for two weeks. Each treatment takes about 40 minutes, and the laser can be administered to the waist, hips, thighs and other areas of the body.
Zerona is backed by clinical trials and several studies, and is currently available in several cosmetic surgery centers in the United States. The excess fat is removed gradually from the body a few days after the laser treatment, and is not designed to be a quick-fix solution for weight loss. The procedure is designed to create a shapelier, more attractive figure in a painless way. Some people may need to undergo more treatments at closer intervals to achieve significant results.
The Zerona feature on the Rachael Ray show can be viewed here:

One of the latest innovations in fat removal procedures is the Zerona laser, a non-invasive procedure that promises to melt the fat under the skin and releases it from the body naturally. This procedure does not involve any medication or incisions, and patients can return to regular activities immediately after the treatment. The device is relatively new to the United States, and has most recently been adopted by Aspect Beauty Medical Spa in Sherman Oaks, one of the first to offer non-invasive fat reduction in Los Angeles.
According to a recent press release about the launch of Zerona at this Los Angeles Medspa, Director Jennifer Gold explains, “We are very excited to be launching the Zerona at the Fashion Square Mall in Sherman Oaks. The opportunity to provide this new fat reducing procedure with our Medically Supervised Weight Loss program allows us to really help men and women achieve their weight and measurement goals.”
The Zerona system involves a cold laser application directly to the top of the skin. The laser energy penetrates deep into the skin tissues to emulsify the fatty deposits, and the broken-down fat cells are then excreted through the urine or by sweating. The Zerona procedure is backed by clinical trials, and was approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration in April 2009.
Results from the controlled study show that patients lost approximately 3.5 to 9 inches after a series of Zerona body sculpting treatments (six sessions over two weeks), compared to just half an inch in the placebo group. Candidates that undergo this procedure must maintain a healthy lifestyle by eating a well-balanced diet and exercising regularly in order to achieve desired results.
The Zerona laser is slowly making its way into other markets, and this liposuction alternative is already available in Boca Raton, Florida, Boston Massachusetts, and South Pasadena, California.

While thousands of patients turn to ‘fat dissolving’ injections and vacuum massage to get rid of cellulite and shave off a few pounds, experts are warning against falling for today’s fat-melting promises.
LipoZap is just one of several laser lipo treatments that have left patients with undesirable results, and these patients are turning to sites such as RealSelf.com, and RipOffReport.com to post their negative experiences – and warn others of the consequences of procedures that are not well-documented.
The original LipoZap website (the LipoZap website is now ‘under construction’ ) provided very few details of what the procedure even entailed, but a basic description indicates it is a minimally-invasive procedure performed under local anesthesia and requires a rapid recovery time (Source: LipoZap).
LipoZap does offer a satisfaction guarantee, but unsatisfied patients are finding it difficult to get their money back – even after several attempts to contact LipoZap or Medical Aesthetica, the makers of LipoZap (Source: RipOffReport.com). This has sparked controversy over whether LipoZap is just another ‘scam’, and angry patients are sharing their thoughts across the web.
Reports of negative results with LipoZap began circulating as early as Spring 2007, where clients such as ‘Lady2Soothe’ reported her results on the Plasmetic message boards. She describes the following experience:
