Two Sisters Charged with Running Illegal Cosmetic Surgery Operation

Posted by Cosmetic Surgery Review on July 3, 2010

Two sisters from Sylmar have been arrested on suspicion of running an illegal cosmetic surgery operation from their home, according to a Los Angeles Police Department police report. The sisters had been injecting cosmetic fillers into patients that hardened into solid plastic. Neither one holds a license to perform injectable procedures, and they have been booked on charges of running an unauthorized medical practice on their property. Bail is posted at $20,000.

All prospective cosmetic and aesthetic surgery patients are advised to do research about their medical practitioner before undergoing cosmetic services, including minimally-invasive procedures such as Botox, dermal filler injections and other skin rejuvenation procedures. Red flags in this industry include discounted rates, extremely low pricing on packages, and discrete locations of the medical center.

Anyone who is administering Botox, injectables or offering various types of cosmetic procedures must hold a state license and have completed formal training. If the individual cannot provide proof of licensure, they are unlikely to have the authorization and training needed to perform cosmetic procedures.

Men and women undergoing more extensive procedures, such as liposuction, facelift surgery and other procedures can check for board-certification of their doctor online. Board-certified doctors are required to complete a certain number of years of training and maintain their credentials by taking continuing education classes and attending workshops and events. Board-certified plastic surgeons, cosmetic surgeons and medical professionals are also qualified to perform revision surgery if the first procedure does not produce desired results.

The American Society for Plastic Surgeons advises all patients to work only with ASPS member surgeons, because these doctors have more than six years of surgical training and experience, and at least three years of training specifically in plastic surgery. Prospective patients can find an ASPS member surgeon here.
