Visian Implantable Collamer Lens Receives CE Mark of Approval

Posted by Cosmetic Surgery Review on May 26, 2010

STAAR Surgical Company, a medical manufacturer that produces minimally-invasive ophthalmic products, has received the CE Mark of Approval for the Visian Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL). The company has made several improvements to the original lens, including the Hypertorpic Toric ICL, designed for patients who are farsighted, and for those that who astigmatism. Both conditions can be treated with a single implantable collamer lens procedure.

STAAR’s CEO Barry Caldwell states the following about the recent changes: “We believe these expanded offerings will provide the broadest correction approval of any refractive technology for surgeons in countries where the CE Mark applies and will allow the surgeon to treat virtually any patient who is a candidate for refractive surgery.”

In addition to providing benefits for patients, the improvements allow the surgeon to perform the procedure with greater precision and ease. The perforating holes in the lens can assist with the removal of viscoelastics, while the improved lubricity on injector cartridges will make it easier for the surgeon to insert the lens into the area. Surgeons will be able to perform the implantation with greater accuracy with new laser marks for the implantable collamer lens.

The implantable collamer lens can be a valuable alternative for patients who are not well-suited for LASIK. STAAR promises that High Definition Visian lenses can provide sharper, clearer and more vivid vision than LASIK. The company also reports that eyes treated with LASIK typically have three times more spherical aberration and two times more coma than those treated with Visian ICL lenses.

The Visian ICL procedure is a relatively short procedure performed on an outpatient basis. In most cases, it is performed within 15 minutes. The treatment also treats a wider range of myopia, from -3.0D to -20.0D, than other implantable lenses. Patients who wish to avoid the complications associated with LASIK and enjoy some better benefits may be good candidates for the Visian Implantable Collamer Lens procedure.
