Cost of Plastic Surgery in the UK Declined in 2009

Posted by Cosmetic Surgery Review on February 15, 2010

While plastic and cosmetic surgeons in the United States experienced a steady decrease in demand for previously-popular procedures, the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons is reporting a steady increase in demand for procedures including facelifts, liposuction and breast implants simply because procedures had become more affordable. The BAAPS reports that the UK experienced a 5% increase in demand from 2007 to 2008, and a 9% increase from 2008 to 2009.

Overall, the plastic surgery industry in the UK increased approximately 8.7% over the previous year, and much of the growth has been attributed to the introduction of new technologies and more affordable treatment options for patients on any budget. Patients are ready to shop around for procedures and compare quotes offered by various clinics. Clinics in the UK typically charge a fee for the initial consultation and follow up care sessions, so patients have to make several decisions before even approaching a plastic or cosmetic surgery center for procedure options.

The most significant price drops in procedures included facelift surgery and breast enlargements. Average prices vary significantly by location of the clinic, the doctor’s experience, fees for anesthesia and the type of repairs or follow up treatments needed to achieve desired results.

Cosmetic Surgery Guru reports that some clinics include the initial consultation and a lifetime of follow up care appointments in their quotes, while others charge on a per-visit basis. Still, overall costs of procedures, consultations and follow up visits declined in 2009, prompting many patients to go ahead with their procedure of choice.

Another emerging trend is the steady increase for cosmetic procedures by men. More men in the U.K. have been heading to the plastic surgeon’s office to rejuvenate their appearance, eliminate lines and wrinkles and achieve a more youthful look with dermal fillers such as Botox.
