Woman Sues for $250K After Botched Laser Skin Rejuvenation Treatment

Posted by Cosmetic Surgery Review on January 4, 2010

Patient Deborah Brown filed a lawsuit against Faces Etc. Permanent Cosmetics LLC in Davidson County Circuit Court earlier this month because a botched laser skin rejuvenation treatment left her in extreme pain and required her to visit the burn unit at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

According to Ms. Brown, her DOT procedure (dermal optical thermolysis) performed on July 17 left her with severe wounds and burns on her face and neck. The DOT procedure is designed to remove age spots, freckles, acne scars and other skin lesions with the application of a heated laser. The heat from the system is designed to create make deep burns within the dermis, which in turn helps to promote collagen production and increases cell turnover. One of the side effects of these procedures is scarring and even burning. The DOTTHerapy.com website reports that this is an ideal treatment for sun damage, skin laxity and brown spots, and promises rapid healing with little or no anesthesia required.

Faces, Etc. offers several permanent makeup procedures that use a similar laser device to get results. Ms. Brown believes that the center “negligently failed to use the proper technique in performing the procedure and failed to set the device on the proper setting…[the center] also failed to use proper conditioning procedures.”

Ms. Brown is suing the center for $250,000 in damages.

Faces, Etc. describes itself as a specialist in permanent makeup and is located in Old Hickory, Tennessee. The center’s listing of services of procedures includes permanent makeup for the lips, eyebrows and eyes, as well as cosmetic enhancements such as mucosal eyeliner, treatment for alopecia, areola reconstruction and stretchmark or scar camouflage procedures. The center offers facial fillers including Botox, Restyalne, Juvederm and Radiesse, and does list laser skin resurfacing procedures using the DOT Therapy system on its website.
