Stem Cell Researchers Make Use of Liposuction ‘Leftovers’

Posted by Cosmetic Surgery Review on September 20, 2009

42-15627085Instead of extracting fat from patients directly for stem cell research purposes, researchers have found a way to make use of the fat removed during liposuction surgery.

A recent report in Scientific American points out that researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine are learning how to use fat cells to turn them into stem cells. Previously, researcher had been using standard skin cells to make induced “pluripotent stem (iPS)” cells for medical research. This process involved scraping the cells from the skin and then working with the cells for several weeks before preparing them for stem cell research processes.

Doctors found that it is much easier to use fat cells for this type of research because it’s easy to access the resource, and each liter of fat yields millions of potential cells that researchers need for stem cell studies. Fat stem cells are more suitable for this type of research because, according to Dr. Joseph Wu, co-author of the study and assistant professor of medicine at Stanford University, “We know that these fat cells are multipotent, which should [make it] easier to reprogram them.” (Source: Scientific American)

Using fat cells for stem cell research means the research process can begin immediately after the fat has been harvested. The fat cells are harvested via liposuction and can be put to use that very same day. In many cases, the turnaround time for these cells to be prepared for stem cell research is just two weeks, which is about half the time it would take for cells extracted from the skin, liver or other tissues.

According to Dr. Wu and his team, there are still some questions to be answered before fat cells can become the standard for iPS cell research. However, they could be the critical link for speeding up the stem cell research process and allow researchers to culture the cells they need at a faster rate.

Packaged Cosmetic Surgery Procedures Appeal to Younger Female Market

Posted by Cosmetic Surgery Review on September 19, 2009

j0438392While hundreds of women continue to sign up for ‘mommy makeover’ specials and other packaged procedures in hopes of undergoing an extreme makeover with the help of a plastic surgeon, some doctors are noticing that many younger patients – women in their 20s and 30s – are looking for similar packages to modify their looks.

In a recent press release from Delaware Plastic Surgery, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Evan Sorokin claims that he is seeing more of his younger breast enhancement patients showing interest in add-on procedures so that they can undergo a complete makeover. In addition to their breast implants and other breast enhancement procedures, these patients are interested in liposuction to get rid of a few unwanted pounds, and dermal fillers that can help them maintain their youthful looks.

Packaged procedures are becoming more common in cosmetic and plastic surgery centers across the country as more women are becoming comfortable with going under the knife. Many plastic surgeons offer packaged procedures at a reduced rate than purchasing procedures ‘a la carte’, and this marketing strategy is already used by medical tourism companies that offer inexpensive plastic surgery procedures abroad.

For younger patients entertaining the idea of undergoing a complete plastic surgery makeover, a one-on-one consultation with a doctor is necessary to ensure that the patient is in good health, and that they understand all of the risks and benefits associated with the procedure. Some women may not be eligible to undergo several procedures if they have certain health conditions or are taking certain types of medication. Others may not be emotionally or mentally ready to undergo such a transformation. Only a qualified surgeon can determine whether the young woman is ready for their surgery, and they are required to explain all of the risks, downtime involved and total cost of the procedures during the consultation.

Plastic Surgery in Argentina Booming During Economic Crunch

Posted by Cosmetic Surgery Review on September 18, 2009

j0438385While plastic and cosmetic surgeons in the United States and the UK are feeling the pinch of the recession, some countries around the world are faring better during these rough economic times.

According to a recent article on CNN.com World News, Buenos Aires and other cities in Argentina are accommodating for the budget-conscious patient and enjoying an economic boom as a result.

CNN reports that many Americans are realizing they can get their coveted surgery and procedures at a very affordable price if they fly to cities such as Buenos Aires for treatment. In most cases, cosmetic surgery in South America costs a fraction of the price of the same surgery performed in the United States, the UK, or Canada.

Medical tourism companies around the globe use this important fact as the basis for their marketing promotions, emphasizing that getting surgery abroad can cost about 75% less than it would in the United States or the UK.

But what about safety? The American Society of Plastic Surgeons has published the report, “Medical  Tourism: Is it Safe?”to highlight many of the disadvantages of having cosmetic procedures abroad. The ASPS encourages patients considering medical procedures overseas to make sure that the physician is qualified and to thoroughly research the facility.  It’s also important to find out what the post-operative care plan is, and how the physician plans to handle any complications that may arise. For many patients, dealing with complications overseas can be stressful and risky, and they may not be able to find the treatment they need if they are carrying certain types of insurance, or do not have the funds to pay for doctor’s visits.

Still, many Americans are hopping aboard a plane to get their procedures from Argentinean doctors that they have researched thoroughly and read testimonials about. According to Dr. Williams Bukret, a surgeon in Buenos Aires who performs nearly 200 plastic surgery procedures per year in Argentina, “You can get excellent plastic surgery here at two or three times less than the cost in the United States or Europe.” (Source: CNN.com)

ASPS Deems VASER Lipo to Be New Standard for Body Contouring

Posted by Cosmetic Surgery Review on September 17, 2009

CBR003523VASER liposuction is one of the newer technologies available for permanent fat removal, and has recently been reviewed by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

According to the results of a study published in the August issue of the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Journal, the official journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, VASER Lipo is now among the clinically-proven procedures for fat transfer. The study suggests that VASER liposuction is indeed safe and effective, and can be used to plump up other areas of the body after fat is removed from another area.

According to Dr. Robert Schwartz, a plastic surgeon who owns a private practice in Dallas, Texas,
“The VASER Lipo System is unlike any other device in that it emulsifies the fat and removes it in small clumps of cells. This emulsion re-injects more smoothly and easily than fat harvested via traditional liposuction.” (Source: Medical News Today)

The study was conducted at Stanford University and involved taking tissue samples of both male and female patients who underwent lipoplasty of the abdomen, back and thighs. Researchers compared the tissue samples of those who had undergone VASER Lipo and suction-assisted liposuction on one area of the body, and found that there was no cellular difference between the two treatments. Consequently, they concluded that VASER Lipo can be just as effective as suction-assisted devices (traditional liposuction).

VASER liposuction uses ultrasound energy to destroy fat cells permanently. Since the fat is emulsified during this process, the procedure allows the surgeon to extract the body fat with ease. VASER liposuction can be performed on nearly any part of the body, and may be particularly effective for treating larger areas that have stubborn body fat such as the hips, buttocks, thighs and abdomen. More information about VASER liposuction can be found here.

American Institute for Plastic Surgery Uses Artefill for Wrinkle Reduction

Posted by Cosmetic Surgery Review on September 16, 2009

BBE038Artefill is among the leading injectable fillers used in the United States because it delivers instant, natural-looking results and can be used on almost all skin types.

The American Institute for Plastic Surgery, a well-known plastic surgery center in the Dallas metro area, is using Artefill for many of its patients that want to fight wrinkles. A recent article in Medical News Today reports that Artefill is only available at a select number of physicians’ offices, and that the American Institute of Plastic Surgery is using it this filler to help treat smile lines, deep wrinkles and other signs of aging.

Dr. Raphael of the American Institute for Plastic Surgery made this statement about using Artefill at his practice: “As surgeons, we are drawn to products that offer long-term solutions and Artefill fills this need for our patients that want a lasting solution for wrinkle correction. We find Artefill offers enormous value as it lasts longer than any other filler on the market today.”

Artefill is the first and only FDA-approved collagen filler made with microspheres, and works by not only augmenting the treated area, but also stimulating collagen production in the skin tissue so that wrinkles and fine lines become less noticeable over time. Unlike hyaluronic acid fillers on the market, Artefill lasts for more than a few months and takes only about fifteen minutes per injection. The microspheres are not absorbed by the body, so the skin remains supported for several weeks and months after the treatment.

Anyone interested in getting Artefill injections will need to undergo a skin allergy test to make sure they are not allergic to the collagen compounds in Artefill. Once approved, they can undergo as many treatments deemed necessary to achieve their youthful appearance. More information about Artefill can be found here.

Katrina Lee Undergoes Liposuction After Critique from Simon Cowell

Posted by Cosmetic Surgery Review on September 13, 2009

katrinaleeSimon Cowell, the famous judge from American Idol told then 18-year old Katrina Lee that he “wished he could put her voice in someone else’s body.” The young singer took this to heart and set out to change her appearance with the help of a plastic surgeon, a dentist and a personal trainer.

According to The Daily Mail, the X-Factor contestant spent a  handsome sum of money to lose weight and improve her appearance so that she could face the judges again.

Katrina reportedly had laser surgery on her face, liposuction, cosmetic dental work and also hired a personal trainer to help her maintain her new figure. She also dyed her hair bright orange for her audition in Glasgow this summer. Her investment may have paid off, because Ms. Lee managed to impress the judges at the audition and she proceeded to the boot camp round of the contest.

Simon Cowell had confessed that “That’s not a nice thing I said” when Katrina faced him after his very-public critique. The conversation made UK headlines, and Katrina claims that after that particular audition, her confidence was crushed and she also battled an eating disorder. She has spent the past five years ‘perfecting herself’ so that she could meet the star standard and start auditioning again.

She told The Sun, “I had to go back and rewrite history. What happened to me the last time nearly tipped me over the edge. It was terrible.”

Since her plastic surgery transformation that has included a significant amount of weight loss, facial surgery and dental work, Katrina feels like she’s a new woman. Her transformation has given her the boost of confidence she needed to get through her auditions with flying colors, and Katrina says, “I’m really pleased I’ve come this far.”

Lipo-Vibe Technique Receives FDA Approval

Posted by Cosmetic Surgery Review on September 12, 2009

Already widely used in Europe, the Lipo-Vibe technique has now received FDA approval in the United States. The technique is known as ‘Nutational Infrasonic Liposuction’ throughout Europe, and has been presented at over 100 physicians’ events around the globe since 1997. This innovative procedure makes use of 3D acoustic energy to help break down fatty deposits during the extraction process.

The gentle vibration and energy emitted by the Lipo-Vibe device is much less pronounced than the type of energy used in ultrasound-based liposuction, and the process includes a rotation and reciprocation that helps to safely remove fat from the body without damaging the surrounding tissues.  Lipo-Vibe does not emit any heat throughout the entire process, so unlike laser-assisted liposuction and other thermal-based fat removal devices, does not run the risk of injuring the tissues around the treatment area.

Lipo-Vibe will join the ranks of procedures such as SmartLipo, CoolLipo and other innovative liposuction techniques that can be used as part of a body sculpting procedure. The device can be used to remove excess body fat around common ‘trouble spots’, and is designed primarily for those that want to balance out an irregular body shape and get rid of a few stubborn pounds.

The device is designed with an automatic shut-off mechanism so that it cannot affect any muscle or skin tissue as the cannula makes its way into the body. This promises a more effective removal of both deep fat and superficial fat, and may help some surgeons achieve a more sculpted look. Ultimately, Lipo-Vibe offers all of the main benefits of conventional liposuction procedures, but may be a less risky procedure.

Since its introduction to the United States, Lipo-Vibe is only available in select markets around the country. As demand for the procedure increases, this technique may soon be available at a cosmetic surgery center in all the major metro areas.

Demand for Laser Assisted Liposuction Expected to Stay Strong Through 2013

Posted by Cosmetic Surgery Review on September 11, 2009

While conventional liposuction surgery continues to be one of the most sought-after procedures for men and women in the United States, there are now several fat removal techniques and procedures to choose from. The latest innovations in liposuction include laser-assisted liposuction, ultrasonic liposuction, and a technique known as water-assisted liposuction. Each one of these techniques offers its own set of benefits and drawbacks, but a recent report by Millennium Research Group, the global authority on medical technology market intelligence, suggests that demand for laser-assisted liposuction will grow faster than other techniques through 2013.

Laser-assisted liposuction has been available in the United States since the winter of 2006 and works by emitting thermal energy to melt the fat before extraction. This allows the surgeon to remove the fat with minimal trauma to the surrounding tissues, and there are currently several laser-assisted liposuction devices on the market.  SmoothLipo, CoolLipo, LipoLite and SlimLipo are some of the FDA-approved devices for getting rid of body fat permanently, and these machines are used at plastic and cosmetic surgery centers around the country.

According to the Millennium Research Group, “the laser-assisted liposuction market will continue togrow robustly and remain the most lucrative fat reduction capital equipment market in North America…market growth will be accompanied by an expansion in the number of competitors and continuous product innovation, with firms attempting to differentiate their products to gain share.”

Laser-assisted liposuction has been heavily marketed as an alternative to conventional liposuction in recent years, and doctors have been putting the spotlight on this procedure’s ability to tighten the skin as it works, and also  for its faster healing times. The procedure can be administered on both large and small areas of the body, and is most suitable for people who want to lose only a few ‘vanity pounds’ around trouble areas. More information about laser-assisted liposuction can be found here .
