Plastic Surgery Documentary on HBO Explores Anti-Aging Obsession in America

Posted by Cosmetic Surgery Review on July 31, 2009

youthknowsnopainThe battle against wrinkles and other signs of aging is fierce in the United States and Europe, and many people turn to plastic and cosmetic surgery in order to improve their appearance and achieve a more youthful look. A documentary called Youth Knows No Pain will air on August 31, 2009 on HBO to take a close look at how America often takes extreme measures to achieve the cultural ideal.

The documentary was produced and directed by Mitch McCabe, a daughter of a plastic surgeon. She spent nearly two years documenting the lives of people who have dedicated a good portion of their lives to looking beautiful, and the documentary puts the spotlight on these people’s lifestyles, what made them choose plastic surgery, and how they are benefitting (or not) from the results. The documentary also includes segments with plastic surgeons and anti-aging specialists around the country to discuss their point of view on the industry, and how American cultural ideals may play a pivotal role in the industry.

The plastic surgery documentary has already been unveiled at several film festivals around the country, and will be presented as a series on HBO. Richard Pena, Program Director of the Film Society of Lincoln Center has reviewed the film and describes it as follows: “Youth Knows No Pain” is an alternately wry and unsettling journey across that grey zone where physical appearance meets self-esteem. Mitch McCabe has assembled for the film a remarkable group of individuals who collectively reveal that there’s a deep discomfort running through the heart (and body) of contemporary America.”

Youth Knows No Pain is part of the Monday night HBO Documentary Film Series that started on July 13, 2009 and will run through the Fall season.
