Laser Fat Removal Surgery Trials Prove to Be Successful

Posted by Cosmetic Surgery Review on July 30, 2009

SlimmingFrom liposuction surgery to ultrasound and infrared fat-zapping treatments, Americans are always looking for new ways to blast away a few extra pounds and achieve their ideal figure.

While some of the infrared and ultrasound fat-melting treatments are under scrutiny by the medical community, liposuction continues to be the most effective way to get rid of unwanted pounds permanently. Now, researchers are looking into noninvasive approaches to fat loss, and have recently unveiled the results of a study that points to the benefits of lasers for permanent fat removal.

Dr. Molly Wanner of the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston recently published results of a study in the August issue of Lasers in Surgery and Medicine that shows the effects of laser treatments on destroying fat cells. According to the pilot study (read the abstract here)  laser radiation could be used to damage the fat cells and help them break down naturally, without doing any damage to the skin. The procedure involved exposing the treated area to high-powered laser while simultaneously delivering a cooling treatment to prevent tissue burns and skin damage. The treated area is exposed to the laser for only a few seconds, and were generally well-tolerated by most subjects. In this study, significant changes to the skin and fat cells in the treated area were reported in 89% of test sites, and 33% of control sites.

If this type of procedure continues to show positive results, we may soon see a new set of procedures available for permanent fat removal. Until now, there have only been some benefits reported with noninvasive treatments such as the Zerona laser system and VelaShape. Most people need to adhere to a strict diet and exercise regimen while undergoing these treatments, and results are not guaranteed because the fat cells are not removed from the body. With laser fat removal, the fat cells would be damaged and destroyed permanently, just as they are with conventional liposuction.
