Plastic Surgeons Say More Minorities Turning to Cosmetic Procedures

42-16875089The quest for the fountain of youth is prevalent in all cultures, and plastic surgeons point out that many minorities are become strong candidates for plastic and cosmetic surgery – even during the economic downturn.

Even when the economy turns ugly, people are willing to shell out the cash to beautify their looks.  Botox, Restylane and a number of other dermal fillers are still among the top most sought-after procedures, and have been deemed the ‘most affordable’ because each injection costs between $400-$600 – in some cases, even less if the cosmetic surgery center is offering a package deal.

According to a recent news story by, doctors are finding that more Hispanic clients are getting Botox.  Demand for this filler increased by 18 percent nationwide, and doctors speculate that the Hispanic culture that once stayed away from cosmetic procedures because it was ‘interfering with nature’ is now evolving to appreciate what Botox can do and is more accepting of cosmetic procedures overall.

Statistics show that Hispanics make up approximately 10 percent of the 12 million cosmetic procedures performed in the United States in 2008.  African Americans make up approximately 8 percent, and Asians make up about 7 percent.  These are all increases from 2007, and demand will continue to rise as more minorities become more accepting about changing their appearance and more comfortable with the idea of transforming their looks.  Asians in particular have found that the double eyelid lift helps them achieve a more ‘Westernized’ look, while African Americans and Hispanics are seeking liposuction, breast implant surgery and Botox fillers.

Doctor Peter Herman of the Dermatology and Aesthetic Center of El Paso also points out that many people are turning to plastic surgery to achieve a more relaxed and aesthetically pleasing appearance in order to get a job. (Source:
