Fat Injections for Breast Augmentation Under Scrutiny

Posted by Cosmetic Surgery Review on November 19, 2008

injectionFat injections and fat grafting techniques are becoming increasingly popular options for filling out facial lines and recently, enhancing the breasts.  Many facial and plastic surgeons prefer to use the patient’s fat cells to contour and sculpt different areas of the body; the procedure involves extracting the fat from areas such as the thighs, abdomen and buttocks and then transferring it to another area of the body for easy adaptation.

Many women who do not want to undergo extensive breast augmentation surgery are also considering fat grafts for breast enhancement.   The procedure invovles injecting fat from the thighs or stomach directly into the breasts, and offers immediate results and natural-looking breasts.  However, some researchers suggest that the risks of this type of treatment may outweigh the benefits.

The Sun Times recently reported on the issue, explaining that the controversy of fat grafts stirred up a heated debate at the American Society of Plastic Surgeons conference in Chicago earlier this Fall.  Critics of the procedure say that there is not enough data available to suggest that fat injections in the breast tissue are actually safe or effective. Researchers will need to continue testing these types of treatments and assessing whether there are any long-term side effects to consider with this type of fat transfer process.

Dr. William P. Adams Jr, a plastic surgeon from Texas points out that the process of extracting fat with liposuction and then converting it into an injection may be more costly and even more complex than the conventional breast enhancement procedure. (Source: Sun Times)

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons is currently investigating the viability of fat grafts for breast augmentation, but does concur that fat injections can work well as facial fillers and for making minor changes to the body. Current acceptable uses for fat injections include buttocks augmentation, wrinkle reduction for the face, and skin enhancements around the neck and jaw area.
