Researchers Confirm Breastfeeding Does Not Cause Sagging Breasts

Posted by Cosmetic Surgery Review on November 11, 2008

While the common side effects of pregnancy include sagging breast, excess weight gain and stretch marks, many women worry that breastfeeding can cause more changes in the body and result in further drooping of the breasts.

However, researchers have recently confirmed that breastfeeding is not the cause of the post-pregnancy ‘droop’ that many women experience during their recovery days; drooping and sagging breasts may simply be the result of rapid weight and water loss after giving birth, and the skin’s inability to ‘bounce back’ to its pre-pregnancy state.

The September/October 2008 issue of the Aesthetic Surgery Journal featured a study that confirms sagging and drooping breasts are the result of age, body mass index and genetic disposition.  Dr. Brian Rinker, a plastic surgeon in Lexington, Kentucky emphasizes that:

“It is widely assumed that breastfeeding will adversely affect the appearance of the breasts, and this has been a major reason cited by women who choose not to breastfeed. However, there has been very little objective data to support or deny that this is, in fact, the case. With this study, we hope to shed some light on the subject and correct any misconceptions.” (Source: Medical News Today)

Many women who have fully recovered from pregnancy can pursue breast augmentation procedures or undergo a breast lift to improve the appearance of sagging breasts.  The ‘mommy makeover’ continues to be a popular option for women who want to restore their bodies back to its pre-pregnancy state and improve their body image.

Women can continue to breastfeed their child without worrying that breastfeeding is contributing to their body woes. In addition to surgery, women who want more youthful or attractive looking breasts can maintain a healthy lifestyle, exercise regularly and lift light weights to strengthen and tone their upper back and chest area.
