Plastic Surgeons Say Raising Those Brows Could Make You Look Unhappy

Eyelid Lift Surgery - Blephoraplasty ResultsEyelid surgery accounted for over 5,700 cosmetic surgery procedures for men and women in 2007,and continues to be a popular procedure for baby boomers looking for an alternative to a full facelift.  However, a recent study suggests that the eyelid lift may not be the best way to improve your looks.

The May 2008 issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the official Journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons features a study that suggests the upper blepharoplasty procedure – otherwise known as an upper eyelid lift – can make some patients look unhappy and tired.

The study took into account several variables that indicate happiness – the brow position and shape, the presence of crow’s feet and any other depressions commonly found on the forehead and nose – and how these were associated with natural human emotions.  Researchers say that crow’s feet and a minimal amount of space between the eyelid and eyelashes is a key factor in the perception of happiness. The abstract and conclusion of this study can be reviewed here.

Still, some doctors might disagree.  Many patients who undergo eyelid surgery also get BOTOX or laser skin resurfacing to reduce fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes, according to Dr. Kenneth Bermudez’s practice in San Francisco:

“Although eyelid surgery can help make the entire face look younger and more refreshed, it is not designed to help reduce the appearance of wrinkles or crow’s feet. However, when performed in conjunction with other cosmetic treatments such as BOTOX® Cosmetic or laser skin resurfacing, blepharoplasty can provide a more enhanced makeover and provide comprehensive facial rejuvenation.” (Source:

Having ‘surgery without the surgical look’ isn’t necessarily easy; improving the facial contours to create a balanced look is the goal of many plastic and cosmetic surgery enhancements for the face, but only an experienced surgeon can ensure that you end up with a youthful and naturally happy appearance.
