YWCA Reports Young Girls Obsessed By Beauty Fixes

Posted by Cosmetic Surgery Review on August 25, 2008

The beauty business continues to be a booming industry, accounting for over $7 billion of sales each year.  More and more women turn to beauty products, cosmetics and even cosmetic surgery to enhance their looks – and possibly their self-esteem – and are willing to pay a high price for their ‘fix’, according to a recent report by the YWCA.

The YWCA, a nonprofit organization that helps empower young women and girls, recently published its ‘Beauty at any Cost’ report, indicating that the average woman spends about $100 per month on beauty products.  Some of these female consumers are willing to pay a high price for cosmetic procedures that not only cost thousands of dollars, but also put their emotional and physical health at risk.

Chief Executive Dr. Lorraine Cole of the YWCA states, “We believe that the obsession with idealized beauty and body image is a lifelong burden that takes a terrible toll on all young girls and women in this country.” (Source: b100wobb.com)

The Beauty At Any Cost report indicates that “the diet, cosmetic and fashion industries are often willing to exploit these narrow beauty standards so women and girls will become cradle-grave consumers of beauty products, cosmetic surgery and diet programs.”

The real cost to women who pay a high price to go to achieve physical ‘perfection’ include: undergoing risky cosmetic procedures; participating in unhealthy competition with other girls and women; and putting themselves at risk with unhealthy cosemtic ingredients.
